It takes a certain level of maturity to realise this. When we're young, keen and ambitious, people can take advantage of the fact we'll say yes to everything. It's encouraged, promoted as a societal norm.

I had to get into my forties before I realised the depth of this: all those automatic "yes" responses cost me somewhere else, every single one of them.
