Whilst I agree with the central crux of this argument (that we should support local bookstores) the graph you started it with is sensationalist. Why not extrapolate your data a few more years, and show Amazon with 100 % of the market? There's no acknowledgement up front that 2000 was a special case, driven largely by people's inability to get to their bookstores.
You're right though, people need to get out and support their local bookstores whilst they can, and save these precious community resources. I think your website is probably a good alternative for those of us who still can't get out, but nothing beats boots on the ground.
Also, don't underestimate the power of libraries to support their local communities and nurture a love of reading. Not everyone can afford to but books, but they can still become avid readers.
